The 2020 International IP Index, a report by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Innovation Policy Center, has found that the UK has the best environment in the world for trade marks and designs. The UK also placed second for (1) overall IP environments, (2) IP enforcement, (3) copyright and (4) systematic efficiency and third for commercialisation of IP Assets.
The report found that the UK's "key areas of strength [are]:
- a strong and sophisticated national IP environment;
- a model for injunctive-style relief for rights-holders when battling online infringement;
- overall strong cross-sectoral enforcement environment, highlighted by the work of a specialist crime unit and cross-industry and government cooperation"
This is great news for the UK and intellectual property, and demonstrates that IP remains a strong and important part of the UK, regardless of Brexit.
I also suspect that this result will come as no surprise to UK attorneys!
The report noted the UK’s strong and sophisticated national IP environment, its work in battling online infringement, the work of its specialist crime unit as well as cross-industry and government cooperation.
