Yesterday, with 5 days to go until the 31st of January (Brexit day), Boris Johnson's government announced its plans to launch a "global talent visa" from 20 February.
The new visa category aims to attract scientists, researchers and mathematicians to the UK, and will replace the current Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa route.
Under the current system, applications (which are capped at 2,000 annually) are endorsed by one of the Designated Competent Bodies i.e. Tech Nation, the Arts Council, Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, and the British Academy.
Following the introduction of the new category, the UK Research and Innovation funding agency will also be permitted to recommend applicants whose profiles satisfy the endorsement criteria (in addition to the other bodies).
The annual cap of 2,000 endorsements, which has never previously been reached, will also be removed.
“As we leave the EU I want to send a message that the UK is open to the most talented minds in the world, and stand ready to support them to turn their ideas into reality.”
