A judge in Spain's commercial courts has held that Ryanair's decision to charge a passenger €20 (£17) to bring her 10kg luggage onboard contravenes Spanish law.

Although this is a Spanish case citing Spanish regulations, it's been widely reported in the UK.

Baggage charges have always been hugely unpopular with customers, especially since checked baggage isn't considered "compulsory" and so doesn't need to be included in the headline price - making many customers feel like they're "hidden" charges.

Ryanair has already stated that it won't be changing its baggage policy - but decisions like this strengthen arguments for a review of airline baggage and ancillaries charges, and will no doubt be seized upon by savvy customers!
